This scene in the musical draws attention to the state of Israel.

Life to them is good, thus they are content. However, there is more to the life that they can see and they cannot see beyond the life that their in. This song is a reflection of the state their in; trapped in the age of contentment. It symbolizes an age of supposed pleasantries which reeks of ill-omen.

Slave march under the dark night sky. Essentially, Gomer’s song. She sings about the dark journey she is about to embark. The other girls join in with the realization that they have all fallen for the same trap.

A short prologue into the reprise of “Sweet, Sweet Gomer” that gives us a glimpse of the other side of Gomer. Gomer is portrayed differently as seen through the eyes of the male chorus. Gomer here is flirtatious. The words that were used to describe her in the first song is seen in another light here.

Hosea has just bought back Gomer from the slave market. Gomer is confused over his actions but nevertheless, feels the strength of his feelings towards her. This song speaks about the love they have and Hosea ties everything in by pointing out how this love that they have come to know reflects God’s love for His people.

The Music – Wedding Transition

Transition from one scene setting to another. Hosea and Gomer is the centre of attention as they interact with each other through choreographed movements and gestures. This scene reflects the passing of time and the courtship stage (as depicted through their movements) which eventually leads to the wedding scene. As this is happening, people congregate in the background (choreographed scene), setting up the props for the wedding scene along the way, depicting a change in time and season as things evolve.

Gomer is introduced for the first time in this scene. The audience and Hosea’s first encounter with “the girl” of his dreams is rather comical and clichéd. In this scene where Hosea checks out who his future wife is, the chorus sings about Gomer, introducing her and what she’s like as a person; “she’s got oh such a reputation”, “talk of town”, “purity…charity” etc.
